Flowers are Calling by Rita Gray

Every once in a while you come across a gem of a children’s book.  And you are reminded of why children’s books are so very important.  Written by Rita Gray and illustrated by Kenard Pak, Flowers are Calling (2015, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt) is one of these books!  It’s lovely! lovely! lovely!  And for those teachers and parents looking for the perfect nonfiction interdisciplinary book to share with kids, Flowers are Calling is it!

The central premise of the book is that flowers ‘call’ all of the animals (butterflies, bumblebees, hummingbirds, etc.) to them in order to be a part of the pollination cycle. The poetic language complements the beautiful watercolor illustrations (see below).

Flowers are Calling is authentic in the way it presents science content and is just … lovely!
