Specs for Rex by Yasmeen Ismail

Yasmeen Ismail‘s (2014) Specs for Rex (Bloomsbury Children’s Books) is a playful book about a little boy who learns to appreciate his glasses.

Rex does just about anything possible to avoid wearing his glasses.  He hides them in his sandwich and even tries to paint them! But when he tries to throw his glasses away, he comes across one of his teacher’s missing items. And when he receives his teacher’s praise, Rex realizes that his specs can be used for good.

An important book for children who are experiencing glasses for the first time, Specs for Rex is a humorous and colorful children’s picture book. I really enjoyed Ismail’s bold, messy illustrations. The dialogue and illustrations work together to create an infectious energy. I think children will really like this book!
