Henry Wants More! by Linda Ashman

This review is definitely dedicated to my nephew. As I was reading this book, I was constantly shaking my head up and down and saying yes! yes!   This book depicts perfectly a day with a two-year-old who refuses to sleep!

Linda Ashman‘s (2016) Henry Wants More! (Random House) is on my new children’s picture book favorite list!

Ashman is right on in her depiction of Henry, a toddler who wants more up, more piano, and more everything!  He absolutely exhausts his mom, dad, grandma, and siblings. But not until Henry falls asleep does his mom realize that she (and everyone) else can’t wait until the next morning for more of Henry!

Readers also end up wanting more Henry by the end of this book!  Fun and energetic, Henry Wants More! is a great read-aloud text. Parents, teachers, kids, and aunts will definitely be able to relate!  I love the playful red words that are used to emphasize Henry’s energy and refusal to rest. Another great element of this book is that it features a multicultural family.  But Henry’s parents’ different races do not overwhelm the narrative but rather normalize Henry’s family structure.  And I cannot praise Hughes‘s panoramic illustrations enough!  I absolutely love the couch scene layout when everyone (including Henry) is asleep!

I can’t wait to hear what you think of Henry Wants More!
