Another Margaret Wise Brown title (read more about her upcoming books here), The Diggers, illustrated by Antoine Corbineau, was just published from Silver Dolphin Books in March. This colorful children’s picture book will be a hit with those little ones you know who like to explore!
The Diggers explores all the things, animals, and people that dig: rabbits, mice, shovels, and diggers, and, of course, mankind. A fun, engaging read aloud text, The Diggers ignores any environmental effects of all this digging as is it unapologetically showcases digging through dirt, sand, and mountainous rock.
There were silly elements sprinkled through the book for seemingly unknown reasons. For example, the detail about digging to find a gnome did not seem related to the realistic elements in the books. Each time I finished the book, I found myself wanting the book to do more for me.
This is a book that I know young children will like. Its colors and repetitive language will get kids excited. Adults, however, may be more interested in digging through the shelves to find another book!
I’m still a lifelong fan of Runaway Bunny, but Brown’s The Diggers earns three stars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
