Happy Sunday Y’all!
You might be someone who has trouble getting to sleep. Me sometimes. You might know a little one who does not always want to go to sleep. Me mostly each night.
You may be looking for a book that encourages inspiration, bravery, and, eventually, sleep. If so, Cari Best’s I’m Brave! I’m Strong! I’ve Five! (out this past October from Margaret Ferguson Books) is just for you! Illustrated by Boris Kulikov, this children’s picture book will be a bedtime favorite for the little ones you know!
Sharing the challenges of a five-year old girl who tries to go to sleep but is just not tired, I’m Brave! I’m Strong! I’m Five! reveals a little girl’s imagination, her neighbor watching, and, eventually, her fears. Even though she knows she can call her parents back in, she calms herself down. Because she’s brave! And strong!
I think it’s important that Best presents a little girl who is able to self soothe. She is aware that her parents are supportive and would help her (so important) but is also confident in her own strength. Such a beautiful message to young children!
There were times when I wanted her imagination to be more present toward the end of the text. Could there have been an imaginative way she could have solved her problem of not being able to sleep? There were also times when I felt the repetition of the book’s title within the story itself was distracting. I was impressed with Kulikov’s colorful, mixed media illustrations.
I’m Brave! I’m Strong! I’ve Five! earns four stars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
