Happy Monday! I hope y’all are doing well! My little boy just turned three (ahhh!!!), and his cousins gave him John Cena‘s Elbow Grease (Random House Books for Young Readers, 2018)! We were both excited to read it!
Cena tells the story of Elbow Grease, a monster truck who is just not as tough or fast or smart or brave as his four much bigger brothers. He endures ridicule and feelings of inadequacy before proving to himself and others that – with a little elbow grease – we can do what we put our minds to!
Illustrated by Howard McWilliam, Elbow Grease will be adored by those who love Mo Willems’s recognition of the reader, the tenacity of the Little Blue Truck books, and the automotive world of Cars.
There were times when I thought the narrative was a bit wordy, but I appreciated that Elbow’s story is not one that ended with winning the race but finishing the race.
A great book for those looking for characters with gumption, Elbow Grease earns four stars. ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
