Hope y’all are having a great weekend! I hope you have something great planned! My little boy and I are going to have a fun day of baking cookies, eating pizza, making slime, and camping in his sleeping bag this evening! And today’s book Eat Up, Bear! fits right in with our festivities!
Quick Summary: Written by Terry Pierce and illustrated by Nadja Sarell, Eat Up, Bear! offers a warning about leaving human food out for bears to eat. It shares the importance of cleaning up after ourselves when outside in nature and setting up a situation in which bears eat food intended for them to eat.
Critique: The message of this book is an important one, and I am sure kids will LOVE the illustrations. What I yearned for, however, was a text that flowed just a bit more. For example, the repetitive rhyming there with bear seemed a bit forced.
Teaching Ideas: Here are some teaching ideas for Eat Up, Bear!
- Pair Eat Up, Bear! with Bear Came Along as you engage in a unit on the importance of community.
- Create a project-based learning opportunity for students to investigate how to help an animal in their community.
Eat Up, Bear! is definitely a fun book that kids will enjoy and earns three stars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
